On Saturday, May 5th, students rolled up their sleeves in a day of service to kick off our Building a Brighter Future youth leadership initiative. This event marked the beginning of a new, year-round program that inspires and empowers students to complete service projects that provide direct, immediate support to kids in need.
Saturday morning, 117 middle and high school students from in and around Boston came together to serve. They heard stories from representatives from Big Sister Big Brother, BPHC, MSPCC and the homeless student liason from Quincy schools. They shared their own stories about the power of giving and community service and worked a three hour shift at The Giving Factory (our warehouse).
What a difference three hours can make! By one o’clock, students had inspected, cleaned, sorted and signed off on: 80 board games and puzzles
36 pre-packs filled with a week’s worth of matched outfits
200 pairs of shoes
Hundreds of books
130 backpacks filled with arts and crafts and school supplies
58 pizzas went missing
