 Kids helping kids

August 16th 2007

One hundred and thirty-three dollars and forty seven cents. That’s what four local social entrepreneurs, ages 4 to 9, raised when they decided to open a seasonal small business.

Perched at the top of their street with a wagon full of cups and a huge container of a  proprietary elixir, they worked for days in the blazing heat, flagging down cars and telling them about their cause. “We want to raise money for kids who don’t have school backpacks,” they would say to neighbors and strangers alike. Each customer received a cold drink, a lesson in social justice, definitions of needing and wanting and last but not least,  a most tangible lesson on giving and doing from these pint-sized philanthropists.

That same message resonated with the cashier and customers queued behind them as they counted out their change to pay for four wagons full of school supplies.  Impatient faces turned to smiles when they apologized for the holdup and explained it was for kids in need. Beaming with pride, the kids handed over bags and bags of school supplies to the staff at Cradles to Crayons.

“It was the highlight of our summer,” said one mom, whose children are 7 and 4. The kids all decided to share their experience on the first day of school as their “favorite summer memory”.
